About Taupo

Taupo has been popular destination for tourists and athletes even before the Ironman NZ shifted here in 1999.

The township of Taupo sits right on the shore of Lake Taupo, NZ's biggest lake which was created by a volcanic eruption thousands of years ago.

Taupo is home to only 20,000 people but is a busy tourist destination famous for its outdoor attractions including trout fishing, hiking in the National Park and geothermal areas, bungy jumping, jet boat rides and of course skiing in the winter time.

Ironman NZ

Each year in early March Taupo goes Ironman crazy.

1300 athletes, their supporters and fans and the media travel to Taupo for a weekend of swimming, cycling and running and partying. Usually more than half of the competitors come from overseas.

One of the reasons so many overseas competitors come to the Ironman NZ is because you don't have to qualify to start, and there are 70 Kona slots available.

The other reason so many people come from overseas is the course. The swim is an out and back course in Lake Taupo, the 180k bike is a two lap course, gently undulating through spectacular scenery, and the run also a two lap course is fast and flat.
