Mountain Biking

The great weather and wide range of riding trails make Nelson a paradise for Mountain Biking. There is a great range of forestry roads, walking tracks and many purpose built tracks to choose from. Many of the best rides are through forestry areas or reserves that surround the residential areas of Nelson. With tracks begin just minutes from the city, you won't need a car to get to them.

The trail builders in the local mountain bike clubs are very active and have built many of their trails to link up with already existing forestry roads or walking tracks. The trails they build are regular stops for the NZ Mountain Bike Champs for Cross Country and Downhill races.

There is enough riding in the immediate Nelson area that you will never need to travel further afield, but should you want to you won't be disappointed. An hour or so by car to the east brings you to the famous Queen Charlotte Track which is a 71 km single track that winds its way along the coast and ridge-lines of the Queen Charlotte and Pelorus Sounds (and back). Because this track is considered a "must see" the Kiwivelo packages include the use of a car to get you there and back.
An hour in the other direction brings you to the Rameka track, a winding single track taking you from Takaka Hill, through the Kaharangi National Park to Upper Takaka.

As for biking trails in the Nelson City area the following rides are a selection of our favourites taken from the Kiwivelo Mountain Bike Map shown below.
